HAMID DRAKE on drums

Yesterday evening I was in a bar talking to my friend George about drums and I realized that every good jazz work (free/avant-garde) that I’m listening this period is with great Hamid Drake on drums.
So here are two examples that I’ve found today on you tube.

Fred Anderson Timeless DVD Trailer
“Chicago jazz legend Fred Anderson leads Harrison Bankhead & Hamid Drake, improvising ground-breaking but warm free jazz at his own historic Velvet Lounge (since moved to 67 E. Cermak). Now on DVD & CD from Delmark Records.”

You can read here a review of this dvd.

I’ve already have the audio disc and I can’t wait to order it.

The second video with Brotzmann on sax is a little bit hard for those who aren’t used to this music, but Drake on drums with W.Parker on bass have the best rhythmic section in my opinion.

Brotzmann / Parker / Drake (2005)

Emanem
Paul Rutherford "Solo in Berlin 1975" (30 Oct.)
Recorded a year after his acclaimed masterpiece, THE GENTLE HARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE, these three festival sets are at least as good. They find Rutherford at his most original and inventive, making wild music by enhancing his trombone with his voice, with mutes and other objects, as well as using his awesome speed and stunning range. No-one else has made the trombone sound like this, before or since. 75 minutes. 5 minutes originally on an FMP sampler - the rest is previously unissued. more

Tru Thoughts
Quantic Soul Orchestra – Tropidelico (22 Oct.)
Nostalgia 77 Octet – Weapons of Jazz Destruction (19 Nov.)

The CMS Archive Project

The Creative Music Foundation, Inc. announces a fundraising drive to preserve the CMS Archive: the large collection of live recordings of its world-renowned Creative Music Studio program. This collection of recordings is unique in its artistic scope: the CMS program featured some of the most outstanding and ground-breaking composers/performers in World Jazz, World Music, New Music, guiding ensembles of highly motivated emerging artists.
Through a combination of benefit festivals, grants, membership and private contributions, the goal is to raise $ 120,000 by the fall of 2007. CMS invites your inquiries and comments and pledges of support by contacting creativemusic@verizon.net. All contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
The CMS Archive contains more than 300 audio and video tapes, recorded from 1972 to 1986 at the CMS facilities in Woodstock NY., as well as at other concerts sites in the US. Among the artists leading ensembles on these recordings are Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton, Leo Smith, Foday Suso, Abdullah Ibrahim, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Giuffre, Frederic Rzewski, Carla Bley, Dave Holland, Paulo Moura, Nana Vasconcelos, Pauline Oliveros, Karl Berger, Baikida Carroll, Trilok Gurtu, Steve Gorn, Ismet Siral, Jack DeJohnette, Fred Frith, Oliver Lake, Lee Konitz, Leroy Jenkins, George Lewis, just to name a few. ( for a more complete list, see http://www.creativemusicstudio.org/).
During the '70- and '80's, the Woodstock-based Creative Music Studio was considered the premier study center for contemporary creative music. Founded in 1971 by Karl Berger, Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman, CMS brought together leading innovators in the jazz and world music communities. Unprecedented in its range and diversity, CMS was an acknowledged phenomenon in the international music world, providing participants with the rare opportunity to interact personally with the musical giants of improvisation and musical thought on a daily basis. CMS is credited as the birthplace of Worldjazz - the improvisational and compositional expansion of the world's musical traditions. Now one of the main driving forces in many styles of music, this concept was pioneered very early at CMS, guided by authentic leaders.
The Creative Music Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation.

Guardala (sax mouthpiece inventor) in Jail

Sax mouthpiece inventor fights extradition NEW YORK, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A Long Island, N.Y., saxophonist faces extradition from Germany to face 12 counts of fraud.
David Guardala developed and marketed the Guardala mouthpiece, which became a sought-after item for well-known professionals and student saxophonists alike, Newsday reported Saturday. But inexplicably, Guardala gave up his business in the 1990s and moved to Frankfurt where he allegedly began defrauding investors in a number of schemes that involved them fronting him money. In all, he is accused of defrauding 10 alleged victims -- many of whom he had personal relationships with -- of $660,000 since 2004.
The saxophonist was arrested at the request of federal prosecutors, who secured his indictment at the U.S. District Court in Central Islip, the newspaper said.

Ιστορικό μνημείο το σπίτι του Coltrane στο Long Island - Coltrane’s Long Island Home Designated a Historical Place
